I have set up this tribute fund in memory of Michael, my "man in a million" who was sadly taken from us on 15th February 2013.
My dear husband Michael was an amazing man. He courageously lived with MS for over 30 years but despite his failing body and being robbed of his independence many years ago, he never complained and kept his great sense of humour right to the end. Caring for him was a pleasure because of his cheerfulness and positive attitude to his situation.
Despite being confined to a wheelchair for 20 years and totally paralysed and unable to speak for the last 13, Michael lived life to the full. He didn't like sympathy or being "wrapped in cotton wool" but enjoyed adventure and living dangerously! To try to make up for the things he couldn't do, it was my mission to find things he could enjoy. This included narrow boat holidays, activity centres where he was hoisted into canoes and sailing dinghies, wheelchair abseiling and flying down zip wires in a special harness! We went Tall Ship sailing on a number of occasions where Michael was hoisted up the mast in his wheelchair. Later we had a wheelchair accessible camper van and travelled widely from Lands End to island hopping in the Outer Hebrides and over the channel to Holland, Belgium and France including a fantastic tour of the French Alps.
Michael lived a positive life and did so much more than many able bodied people do.
He was taken from me suddenly after a very short illness just 4 months before we were to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. Michael also leaves 2 sons, Tim and Sam of whom he was very proud, his parents, Penry and Evelyn, sisters, Jane and Cath and many extended family.
I have set up this Tribute Fund to help us remember the happy times, of which there were many, despite the difficulties. It is also as a way of repaying the hospice for their care over the years through respite, day care and the hospice at home team, supporting us and enabling Michael to spend his final days at home with us.
God saw you getting weary
The hill too steep to climb,
He put His arms around you
And whispered: Peace be thine.
Loving and remembering you always, Wendy xxx
